Mary and Max

Max: Do you have a favourite-sounding word? My top 5 are ointment, bumblebee, Vladivostok, banana and testicle.
After about a week of hesitation, i decided to write my very first "real" review of a movie. disclaimer, i am not in any position to criticize anything. but this is my blog, and i can write whatever pleases me...so screw you...you...you...whoever you are who thinks this is lame.
As mentioned, Mary and Max has been the talk of the town (and when i say "the town", i'm referring to the small room in the 5th floor of our building that houses my project team) for quite some time now. so i saw it sometime last week. and i must say that i really really really enjoyed the flick.
the story is about mary, an 8-year-old girl from australia who became pen pals with a 40-year-old max, a mentally unstable single man in new york. their long-distance platonic relationship blossomed for 18 years. even with the (humongous) age gap, both of them formed an unlikely bond. they both shared a common penchant for chocolates, experiences with bullies and a strong desire to find a real friend.
mary and max is an adult-themed, stopmotion claymation film. not really for the kids to watch. the movie made my heart ache in more ways than i ever thought. mary, during her childhood, was consistently teased by other kids. her parents had no time to give her attention, her mother even referring to her as an "accident". max, on the other hand, has struggled with a condition called Asperger syndrome which is a form of autism that makes social interaction difficult for him. the movie centralizes on the letters they send back and forth, their reactions (mostly max getting an anxiety attack), and the effect it had on their lives and the lives of the people around them.
i am always a sucker for simple stories told in a completely weird way. mary and max is a good example of this. technically, the film is well done. as in stunning visuals. the script was funny, original and moving. i've always wanted a film that focuses more on friendship. just friendsip and nothing more. none of those cheesy highschool musical-ish segments. it's a nice break from the huge blockbusters, romantic comedies and gay-themed indie films that can be quite tiring.
in conclusion, mary and max is a must-see film. it will make you laugh, cry and in my case, hate yourself for not having written it first.
