the ghostwriter.

ewan mcgregor is this film did not particulary spark my interest the first time i heard about it. i thought it would just be another one of those boring thrillers. but late one night, i saw the dvd being sold near the bus stop and thought...well what the heck. it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot. and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. the ghostwriter had the right elements of what a thriller should be. the entire movie felt like an agatha christie book brought to life. i really felt scared for ewan's character as he tries to piece together the mess he got himself in. and the plot twist was just delicious. 4/5 stars on a kind of off-topic note: i must admit, this film left me so much more intrigued about the ghostwriting profession. i knew about the existence of ghostwriters, mostly on collaborating with politicians who can't put together words for their speeches and students who are too lazy to come up with research/term papers or celebrities w...

bright star.

for a good number of days, Douglas bugged me about seeing this film. though, i am not so much of a fan of the 19th century as he is but i did enjoy some of the movies depicting this era so i thought of including Bright Star as part of my holy week roster. the movie, which was written and directed by jane campion, tells the story of the love affair between fanny brawne and romanticist john keats. it was set in 1818 in Hampstead, London. to be honest, my feelings for the film would have to be 50/50. overall, it wasn't so bad. the story was good and you really feel the character's love for each other grow each scene. and i liked the fact that it wasn't amplified or pinilit. there were also some subtle moments like the occasional banter between fanny and mr. brown which i thought was rather cute. but some of the other parts can be pretty draaagging. there were times that i'd get bored, waiting for something to happen. then, it would get even duller. it was fru...

paper heart.

i don't care! life is too short to be wondering 'what if?'. sometimes you just gotta live, see what happens, even if you get hurt. sometimes you can only feel something if you take a risk... -Charlyne Yi my review for paper heart has been pending for weeks. it took me several viewings to finally think of something to say. maybe because, this is one of those films that really struck me as brilliant and i wanted to be able to write something that's cohesive enough for people to understand. paper heart centralizes on an important question that had baffled each and every one of us at some point in our lives: "Does true love really exist?". this led charlyne yi on a quest across different parts of america to film a documentary about love, which she claims she never felt and doesn't believe in. during her journey, she met a guy (michael cera), who eventually became her boyfriend and subsequently led her to be open to the possibility of loving someone. the...

Mary and Max

Max : Do you have a favourite-sounding word? My top 5 are ointment, bumblebee, Vladivostok, banana and testicle. After about a week of hesitation, i decided to write my very first "real" review of a movie. disclaimer, i am not in any position to criticize anything. but this is my blog, and i can write whatever pleases me...so screw you...you...you...whoever you are who thinks this is lame. As mentioned, Mary and Max has been the talk of the town (and when i say "the town", i'm referring to the small room in the 5th floor of our building that houses my project team) for quite some time now. so i saw it sometime last week. and i must say that i really really really enjoyed the flick. the story is about mary, an 8-year-old girl from australia who became pen pals with a 40-year-old max, a mentally unstable single man in new york. their long-distance platonic relationship blossomed for 18 years. even with the (humongous) age gap, both of them formed an unlikely...
