paper heart.

my review for paper heart has been pending for weeks. it took me several viewings to finally think of something to say. maybe because, this is one of those films that really struck me as brilliant and i wanted to be able to write something that's cohesive enough for people to understand.
paper heart centralizes on an important question that had baffled each and every one of us at some point in our lives: "Does true love really exist?". this led charlyne yi on a quest across different parts of america to film a documentary about love, which she claims she never felt and doesn't believe in. during her journey, she met a guy (michael cera), who eventually became her boyfriend and subsequently led her to be open to the possibility of loving someone.
the movie mixes fiction and non-fiction content (in wikipedia, it said something about "hybrid documentary") . yi interviewed real-life couples, children and even science experts asking them about their opinion and experiences with love. she mixes their stories with paper cut-out reenactments which was a delight to watch. it provided the movie with that raw, artistic flavor that is refreshing.
charlyne yi is a remarkably gifted artist and this is reflected throughout the entire movie. i like the fact that she is so comfortable in her own skin and as seth rogen said, she's dedicated to creative things which i find admirable. michael cera is just amazing as usual. he's so funny but in a real subtle way. he came out as an extremely sweet and nice guy (been crushing on him since juno). really loved their scenes together because they look sooo darn cute and you can't help but root for them in the end.
my favorite part is definitely the one where charlyne sang a song for michael. loved the rawness of it and it reminded me of the days when i too am so deeply into a relationship where the world seems less depressing and everything fits right.
paper heart isn't really for everyone to appreciate. but i think it has great potential. its the sort of movie that will keep you smiling until the end.
